Accepting Students!

Hi! My name is Kevin Wang and I am a graduate of Duke University going to medical school. I have previously taught students at elementary schools individually and in groups.

Languages: English, Chinese

USCF: 2225

I began playing chess around the age of 8, and I found it very important from a young age to have a mentor who could assist my chess journey, not only on the board, but also off the board. A large part of chess success is psychological, and I hope to help young students in this area as well. I hope to have a fun time with students so that learning is exciting.

For my lessons, I plan to review games that the student has played to learn from mistakes, as well as train tactical vision and present opening ideas and strategies.

Between lessons, students can feel free to send me any questions about positions they may have.

1 hour private lesson - $50 During the lesson, we will go over previous games played by the student, not only talking about tactical ideas, but also long-term plans and the best way to think for improvement. After analyzing all games, I prepare lesson plans targeting students' weaknesses.

Student Review:

I feel more than fortunate to have Kevin as my kids' chess coach.  My two kids (8 and 14) had been learning chess for a year and a half and were at 1000 when they learned from Kevin.  They love Kevin's class!  Both of their ratings increased in just two months of study with Kevin.  One had a significant increase.

Knowing Kevin was a high school senior (and soon to be a college student at Duke), I was skeptical about several things before the first class.  It didn't take long for Kevin to prove that he's not only passionate about coaching youngsters, but also great at it.

In the first classes, Kevin worked with my kids on game analysis.  It was evident that he not only knew what he wanted to teach but also understood how to work with kids of different ages. Both of my kids tend to be quiet.  I liked that he always asked my kids questions.    It helped when they were often asked to share their thoughts.  They were clearly engaged every minute in the classes.  I really liked that he reviewed each game twice, the second time, reviewing everything again and further test if the students had learned.

After a few classes, Kevin was able to tell the differences in my kids' playing styles.  He further personalized his lessons.  As Kevin said, his focus was to help his students to be the best they could be in chess.  He did what he said.  He was always willing to do extra for my kids, whether it meant more personalized lessons, more lesson time, or more help on tournament games.
They could never wait for their next class with Kevin.  We're traveling in Asia last month.  My kids were willing to get up at 6am to learn from Kevin!  In just two months, their ratings increased by 270 and 110!

We're very lucky to be able to have Kevin.  I'd highly recommend him to other chess parents and kids.
